| Distribution | This is a species of very wide distribution, which has been recorded from Cochinchina, southern Laos, Cambodia, southeast and peninsular Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, and the Philippines. It occurs sporadically throughout the peninsula, on low-lying undulating land as well as hills up to about 600 m. Although formerly common in parts of western Pahang, elsewhere only scattered trees or small groups have been noted. This is the only representative of the Balau group in Perlis and northern Kedah. Now endangered. |
| Bole Characteristics | Medium to large trees, frequently exceeding 2.5 m girth; buttresses rather large and sharp; bole grey-brown with a characteristic yellow tinge, irregularly vertically cracked and sometimes scaly, the bark falling in irregular flakes; occasionally with exudations of dark amber colored dammar, crown with graceful, drooping branches. |
| Herbarium Characteristics | Oblong-lanceolate, usually about 9 x 4 cm and 16 nerved, but sometimes much larger with up to 26 pairs of nerves, thin in texture, drying dark reddish-brown on both surfaces; petiole slender, drying black, about 1.5 cm long. |
