Keruing Belimbing

Botanical Name
Dipterocarpus grandiflorus Blanco
GenusDipterocarpus
FamilyDipterocarpaceae
DistributionThis species, like D. gracilis, has a very wide range of distribution, from the Andaman Islands and peninsular Burma, through central and southern Thailand, Vietnam, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo, to the Philippines. In the peninsula it is widely distributed, probably occurring in every state. In Temerloh and Kuala Pilah districts it occurs on low, undulating land, but usually it shows a preference for ridges in hilly country. The species was also collected from all the five larger islands of the Malay Peninsula (Wyatt-Smith 1953). The altitudinal range is from about 50 – 650 m, but D. grandiflorus is probably most common in the lower levels of the seraya (Shorea curtisii) belt at about 300 m. Still widespread, it is nevertheless vulnerable owing to logging and land conversion.
Bole CharacteristicsA typical Dipterocarpus growing to large size in suitable situations, but often maturing when quite a small tree on steep ridge tops; bole usually light yellowish in color and rather scaly but with comparatively smooth, lenticellate portions.
Herbarium CharacteristicsUsually ovate or elliptic-ovate, acuminate, about 15 × 9 cm, but very variable and sometimes much smaller, glabrous; petiole slender, about 7 cm long on average leaf.
