Distribution | This species occurs in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines. It is widely distributed throughout the peninsula, from Perak and Kelantan, to Johor. Typically, it is a lowland species, rarely found above 150 m. It is not generally common, but occasionally, over limted areas, several trees per hectare may be found as, for example, at Ulu Kangsar (Bubu Forest Reserve), Palong (Negeri Sembilan), and Ulu Tempurung (Kelantan). A population occurs in the Pasoh Research Forest. It is now endangered owing to land conversion. |
Bole Characteristics | A large, typical Dipterocarpus; bole of young trees light colored, marked with horizontal furrows; older trees yellowish brown, the bark surface studded with diffuse, medium-sized lenticels. |
Herbarium Characteristics | Broadly ovate or elliptic, about 22 x 15 cm but considerably variable, rather thin in texture, glabrous and drying brown on both surfaces (not glaucous), with about 15 pairs of main nerves, petioles about 5 - 7 cm long, black and glabrous. |
