DistributionS. pauciflora is widely distributed from the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra to Borneo. In the peninsula it occurs from Kedah and Kelantan to Singapore. It is typically a tree of low-lying but well-drained jungle, but it also occurs in hilly jungle up to 600 m and may be found at even higher altitudes in valleys for which it shows a preference. It can rarely be ranked among the most abundant merantis, but it is frequently quite common. It is particularly common in Ijok Forest Reserve, Perak. Now, it may be endangered in much of the peninsula, by land conversion.
