Meranti Rambai Daun

Botanical Name
Shorea acuminata Dyer
GenusShorea
GroupRed Meranti
FamilyDipterocarpaceae
DistributionThis species is known from the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and the Lingga Archipelago. In Borneo a large-leafed sister species of S. acuminata, S. quadrinervis Sloot., occurs. S. acuminata is found throughout only the southern half of the peninsula, the northern limits being Bikam Forest Reserve in lower Perak in the west, and near the Terengganu River in the east. It seems to be absent from eastern Pahang, but it is common in the Temerloh and Kuantan districts, and to the south. It is probably most plentiful in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, where it is sometimes the most abundant meranti in the jungle. It occurs on low-lying, well-drained land, but it is more abundant in hilly country up to 300 m. The altitude limit is probably about 650 m. Although greatly reduced by forest conversion, this species is not currently at risk.
Bole CharacteristicsLarge trees frequently exceeding 3 m girth (record = 6 m); buttresses short or tall, but not wide-spreading; bole usually well shaped and of good clear height, grey or reddish-brown, shallowly irregularly fissured, the bark falling in small irregular, thick flakes (with age the bark surface may be rough with small indentations and have quite lost its fissured appearance); rather large exudations of opaque yellow-crusted dammar common; crown wide-spreading, with characteristics, long, drooping branchlets.
Herbarium CharacteristicsOvate-lanceolate, acuminate, unequal at the base, frequently slightly revolute along the margins, about 9 x 4 cm, about 8-nerved, drying dull purple-brown in colour; petiole about 1 cm long.
