DistributionThis species is well known in Burma, where it occurs in evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, from Chittagong southwards. Its distribution extends through peninsular Thailand. With us it is most common in the north, but it has been found as far south as Negeri Sembilan and Pahang. It favors low altitudes and deep valleys at the base of mountain ranges. This habitat has mostly been converted to agriculture, and this species is now endangered throughout its range.
Bole CharacteristicsVery large trees, recorded up to 9 m girth; buttresses, bole and bark characters typical of the genus.
Herbarium CharacteristicsElliptic-oblong or obovate-oblong, averaging about 14 x 7 cm and about 17-nerved but extremely variable, venation mainly reticulate, secondary veins looping near the margin, quite glabrous and only sparse furnished with minute scales (only visible in high magnification) that are concolorous with the light greenish grey or yellow-brown dried leaf; petiole rather slender, obscurely 3-lobed.
